Roofing damage or repair is a serious problem and you need to be ready to address the problem. Your roof can be damaged in several ways. Roof damage is typically attributed to damage that is done to the shingles.
Shingles can be damaged by:
Hail: The loss of the granule layers on your shingles will cause the asphalt-layer to be exposed to UV Radiation. This could cause the shingle to deteriorate rapidly. If hail is sufficient enough in size and hardness, it can puncture both the shingle and the decking.

Ventilation: If you have improper ventilation in your attic, this will cause the shingles to heat up and bubble, which can be a very serious problem. In older homes you will see this quite often. Also you can find that high humidity levels induced by heating our homes in winter can cause the attic insulation to mold causing upper respiratory infections so common in the winter months.
High Winds: Winds over 45 miles per hour will lift the shingles on your roof and cause the seals to actually break, which can never be resealed. The unsealed shingles will then flap in the breeze and soon break off.
When you consider all of the possibilities of how your roof can be damaged, you really start to wonder what damage has your roof sustained over the years. Take another look at the possibility of hail.
Hail Damage Up Close.
Hail can damage your roof, siding or gutters without any visible signs from the ground. The hail normally has to be at least the size of a golf ball before it will break through your shingles or cause bruising. However, if driven by high winds or if it hails for more than a few minutes, your roof will suffer from a loss of protective granules. This can greatly reduce the service life of your roof.
In a cedar shake roof, the hail splits the shake and if the split lines up with a joint within the third layer above, a leak can develop.
Now that you have a better understanding of how your roof can be damaged and how to spot possible damage, let's talk about how NewRoofs.com's experience can help you.
Our Roofing Process
We roof per the National Association of Roofing Contractors guidelines. We strip off the old shingles and check for any bad decking or flashing. We then apply felt, ice and water shield (if code), valley material and re-roof to code using four (4) nails per shingle.
Please keep in mind that this is a major construction project. The shingles, particularly second layers, come off in pieces. Expect a bit of mess no matter what contractor does the work - but please be assured that service is of the utmost importance, so every effort will be made to protect and keep your property clean.
We clean up and haul away the trash, including picking up excess nails with a magnet. Re-roofing will take from one to two (1-2) days to complete in most cases. |
